2 weeks left
On Monday my midwife indicated that the baby was measuring small. She estimated that the growth was off by 3 weeks. I was devastated. My pregnancy has been so healthy. My blood pressure has been perfect from the beginning. I’ve only gained 26 pounds. I haven’t stopped doing anything that I did before I got pregnant (except for high mountain hiking). I felt like maybe I just didn’t eat enough. Maybe all of my crazy ideas on nutrition were hurting the baby? The midwife seemed to think everything was fine but suggested that Rourke and I have an ultrasound just to make sure that the levels of amniotic fluid were adequate, the placenta was intact, and the umbilical cord was functioning properly. We have had a completely natural pregnancy since the beginning. I’ve only consented to two blood tests. No ultrasounds. No extra tests. We’ve only used the Doppler to listen to the baby’s heartbeat twice. Everything has been hands-off – as natural as possible. I couldn’t handle the idea that something might be keeping the baby from growing so we consented.
We had the ultrasound yesterday. Everything was fine. All fluids looked good. Baby seems healthy, just a little small. My mom keeps telling me that the women in our family grow small babies. She also hinted that I should eat more meat and cheese – which is exactly what I haven’t been eating in large amounts since I got pregnant! Just knowing that there was nothing preventing baby from getting bigger lifted a huge weight off my chest. I just felt like I could breath and settle back into the rest of the pregnancy.
We also consented to find out the sex of the baby. We were so sure that we already knew that we felt like it didn’t matter. We knew that whatever the technician said would just be confirmation for us. Strike one for Lauren and Rourke. Our little baby is most definitely not a girl! I will never forget that moment. I felt like I had lost my footing. I looked at Rourke and he looked at the monitor and we both, quite stunned, asked if she was sure. She took a picture of the male organs and said “yep. It’s a boy.” I guess it’s kind of comedic in a way. We like to think that we are so in touch with what is happening in our bodies. We believe in our visions and our dreams…. and we were so wrong. What else can you do but sit back and laugh? Poor baby, I thought he was a she this whole time.
Now, I’m questioning if I have maternal instincts at all. Hopefully they will get better after the baby is born!
